Diogenes and Alexander the Great
The story is about a man named Diogenes who lived in Ancient Greece. He was a wise but strange man. He believed that no man needed much, that's why he himself lived in a barrel and rolled it from place to place. He spent his days sitting in the sun and saying wise things to people. Once Alexander the Great wanted to do something for the good man whom the king hadn't met him before but heard a great deal about him. The famous general asked if there was something he could do for the wise man. Diogenes asked the king to step aside and not to keep the sunshine away from him. Alexander was surprised at the man's words but he wasn't angry for he was a kind and intelligent man. From the story we understand that the king was as clever as Diogenes. That's why he didn't get angry about his witty answer. The king told his officers that he'd like to be Diogenes in he weren't Alexander.
Personally, I really enjoyed the story. I think Diogenes was a genius and a very good person who treated people equally and wouldn't ask for something that wasn't a necessity. He lived a simple, virtuous life and enjoyed it to the fullest. Unlike Alexander he wasn't burdened by his duties and responsibilities. He was completely free to do whatever he wanted, to say what he wanted, to be where he wanted. However, Alexander the Dreat had made his country strong and powerful. During the reign of Alexander the Empire flourished and people adored their king. He'll be forever remembered as a great a man beloved and respected by many. Alexander had a great purpose in his life and he fulfilled it. I would like to be more like Alexander. Although I find Diogenes's way of living more liberating, sleeping in a barrel doesn't sound like fun.

I have just listened the story called "Michelangelo". I would like to tell you about it.
Michelangelo was a famous sculptor. He lived in Florence. He was well-known in Italy for his beautiful works. The governor of Florence made up his mind to ask the famous sculptor to make a statue out of the large piece of marble. A sculptor had tried to do it before him but he only spoiled the marble. Michelangelo worked for two years. And at last he completed a beautiful statue which he called David. The day the statue was ready a large crowd of people gathered in the square. The governor of Florence came too. He stood for a long time looking at the statue. Then he said that he didn't like it because David's nose was too long. Michelangelo made his mind to please the governor and not to spoil the statue. He went up to the statue with a handful of marble dust. He pretended to changing the shape of the nose and at the same time dropped some of the marble dust which he had taken with him. The governor thought that Michelangelo was really changing the shape of the nose. When Michelangelo had finished the governor said that he had given more life to the face. And the people who understood what Michelangelo had done shouted with joy that this statue was one of Michelangelo's best works.
I really like this story! Michelangelo was not only a wonderful sculptor, but also a very intelligent person. And also l enjoy his works.
I would like to tell you a story about Balzac, the famous French writer, who was a man of great talent. He is the author of “The Human Comedy”. Balzac was proud of his ability to tell a person’s character by her or his handwriting. He often told his friends that he could tell anybody’s character exactly by his handwriting.
One day a woman friend brought him the boy’s exercise book. The woman said that she wanted to know what Balzac thought of the boy’s character.
She told him that the boy might tell her the truth such as the boy was not her son . Then Balzac said that the boy was a bad and lazy fellow . The woman smiled and she said that it was Balzac’s own exercise book from his childhood. This story seems funny to me. Unfortunately, we do not recognize Balzac’s reaction, but I think he was surprised and laughed at this situation
One day narrator's uncle Melic travelled from Fresno to New York. Before he got on the train his uncle Garro paid him a visit and told him about the danger of travel.
Uncle Garro advised Melic to choose his sear carefully, sit still and not to look about.
Garro also warned Melic about two men wearing uniforms. He said that the men would come down the aisle and ask Melic for his ticket. Uncle Garro advised to ignore them, because they would turn out to be impostors.
After that uncle Garro told Melic about a pleasant young fellow who would offer him a cigarette. Garro suggested him to day he's not a smoker, because Garro predicted the cigarette would most likely come to be doped.
Melic agreed with everything and continued listening.
Uncle Garro warned Melic about a beautiful young lady that he should ignore and pretend to be deaf, because the lady would turn out to be an adventuress and cause Melic trouble.
Garro also forbade Melic to play cards in the smoker. On his opinion, that was the only way for Melic to travel safely.
Oh, I almost forgot, uncle Garro gave Melic a tip for keeping his money safe. According to the tip, Melic was supposed to put all his money in a shoe and put it under the pillow. Melic was supposed to keep his head on the pillow all night and not to sleep at all!
Melic agreed with everything his uncle had told him and even tried to follow his advice. But...nothing bad happened, so he gave up the whole thing and just enjoyed himself.
When Melic returned from New York, his uncle visited him again. However, Melic didn't tell him the whole truth about his journey because he didn't want to neither disappoint nor upset his old uncle. Uncle Garro was very pleased to know that his experience was profitable for somebody else.
It's a story of a famous French author whose name was Balzac, the author of "The Human Comedy" and many other clever novels.
This story is about him being a handwriting expert.
Balzac was a man of a great talent and often told his friends that he could tell anyone's character exactly by their handwriting. Once a woman friend of his brought him a boy's exercise book and asked him to tell her something about the boy's character. She also said that the boy was her son. Balzac studied the book real carefully. He was sorry to tell her that the boy was a bad lazy fellow. The woman smiled and said that it was Balzac's own exercise book from when he was a little boy.
In conclusion, I'd like to say that I think the woman's actions were so clever and funny. We can't be sure whether Balzac could or couldn't tell one's character according to their handwriting, but this lesson definitely made him less of a show-off.
Aesop and the traveler
I've just listened to the story about Aesop. He was a very clever man who lived many hundreds of years ago in Greece. He was known as a writer and as a man who was fond of jokes. One day when he was enjoying a walk he met a traveler. The traveler greeted him and asked how soon he would get to town. Aesop told him to go. The traveler didn't follow his advice as he wanted Aesop to answer his question. Aesop told him to go one more time. The traveler thought that Aesop was mad and went on. When he started to walk Aesop said that it would take him two hours to get to the town. The traveler asked him why he hadn't told him that before. Aesop answered that he hadn't known how fast the could walk.
I like this story because it is funny and shows us that Aesop was really a wise man and could joke well.
A: Hi, Cathy! Do you know that we're expecting a foreign student from England?
B: Hi! Yes, I can't wait to see her! Have you got everything checked?
A: Of course! I've just been to the dean's office and now I know what we are to do.
B: What are we to do when she arrives?
A: We are to meet her at the station with some flowers. Don't you mind giving them to her?
B: Sure. Would you like to show her around?
A: Absolutely! Firstly we are to walk around the city centre.
B: What places are we going to visit with Jess?
A: Well, according to the dean's list, we are to visit the Kremlin, an art museum and the Opera house.
B: And what are we to do next?
A: We are to have a dinner somewhere in the city centre. Do you know any good cafés there?
B: Yes, I do. There are some attractive and not expensive ones in the Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street.
A: I trust you. Well, after having a meal we are to go back to the University.
B: For what?
A: We'll introduce our group-mates, other students and professors to her.
B: And we should make a building tour. It's too easy to get lost here!
A: You are terribly right. All these stairs and transits between buildings are something...
B: Yes. And it it important to know where the dean's office is located. And cafeterias, lavs...
A: Yes, yes, yes.. And after the excursion we are to hold her up to the hall of residence.
B: Should we help her with furnishing and so on?
A: I suppose, we will have to do it, because it is impossible to do it on one's own.
B: And.. When is she arrive?
A: Let me look at the list.. Oh, she is to arrive in 20 minutes!
B: Let's go! Hurry up!
I've just listened to the story called "Diogenes and Alexander the Great" and i want to tell you about it.
Diogenes was a wise man who lived in Ancient Greece. People came from all parts of the land ro see him and talk to him. Diogenes was a strange man. He said that no man needed much, so he lived not in a house but in a barrel which he rolled from place to place. He spent his days sitting in the sun and saying wise things to those who were around him. When Alexander the Great went to see Diogenes, he was lying on the ground by his barrel and enjoying the sun. When Diogenes saw the king he set up and looked at Alexander. The king greeted him, said that he had heard a great deal about him and asked if he could do anything for the wise man. Diogenes asked him to step aside a little so as not to keep sunshine from him. The King was not angry about this answer. He said to his officers that if he had been not Alexander he had to be Diogenes.
I like this story because it shows us that a person doesn't need much to be happy.
Balzac As a Handwriting expert
I have just listened to the story that tells us about Balzac a famous French writer and his special ability. He was a handwriting expert so he could tell about a person's character by his or her handwriting. He was very proud of his ability. One day a woman brought him a boy's exercise book. She said that she wanted to know about the boy's character. She added that the boy was not her son and Balzac might tell her the truth. Balzac studied the handwriting carefully for a few minutes and said that the boy was a bad lazy fellow. The woman smiled and said that it was very strange because the page was from Balzac's exercise book which he had used when he had been a boy. I like this story because it shows us that pride is a bad trait of character.
